Cable break-in can be a pain in the ass, a long wait and a frustrating process. As skeptical as you may be, a serious audiophile and enthusiast owes it to him/herself to experience how much improvement is possible with proper break-in using a cable cooker.

Cables right out from the box can sound harsh, laid-back, piercing, loose and lacking in bass. After hours and hours and days of listening impressions, most listeners will usually either accept the sound or more or less give up and decide on other cables. Little they know, the cables may not even open and reveal the true potential hidden behind the engineering and construction materials. Interestingly, you may not even notice if the cable that you have owned for years has been fully or properly run-in.

The warming up process and conditioning of cables is very much dependent on the cable itself. Using the AudioDharma, some will take as little as 24hrs and some up to 96hrs. Too much cooking will not yield better results. So how much cooking are we talking about? rare, medium rare or well-done? Definitely we are looking at well-done but not over-cooked. We listen to the cable every 12hrs of cooking and subsequently, every few hours when we feel the cable is about "well-done".

Guess what this is? Well, no prize for guessing since the topic clearly states it's a DC-DC power supply. This power supply is used for all Mcintosh head units - MX406, MX406s, MX4000 and MX5000, as well as the highly regarded Clarion players such as HX-D1 and 9255, to channel a stable 15volts to your player. The HX-D2 power supply is a nicer looking variation, which serves the same purpose.

"Upon hooking the Audio Magic conditioner in my rig, the first thing that struck me about the SMR is that it sounds very neutral. Unlike my Powertrans plus Richard Gray power conditioning which has slight emphasis on the mid and highs, the SMR does not seem to enhance any spectrum of the audio band. And because of the neutral sound that I get with the SMR, the highs seem to be more rounded. Teddy Goes to the Movies CD by Teddy Robin (MusicNet MN1004) illustrates this point extremely well. With my Powertrans-Richard Gray combination, the highs when the cymbal is struck, have more bite than the sound that I got from the SMR. But the wallop of the kick-drum seems to be slightly heftier with the SMR.

Another CD that I tried, Ngan Lin Mou (Music Net MN1002), also shows that the highs are not as airy nor extended with the SMR when compared to my own combination of Powertrans-Richard Gray. Extended listening of the SMR has actually revealed a slight graininess of the highs with the Powertrans-Richard Gray combination, something that I have never been aware of.

Listening to Reference Recording Tutti (RR-906CD) which includes some of the most dynamic classical music ever recorded does show that the SMR does not slouch in the area of dynamics. I do not feel shortchanged whatsoever when I listen to last 2 tacks of this CD. The glorious tympani whack in Great Gates of Kiev retains its stunning power. This is no mean feat as my ATC speaker, sensitivity of 88dB @ 8 ohms, will suck as much current as you can throw at it especially with the dynamic, high volume music. The sounstage with both types of conditioning is equally wire though the Powertrans-Richard combi edge the SMR slightly in terms of having a better layering.

So should you go for the Audio Magic Stealth Mini Reference? Well, if you have a system of decent resolution, you owe it to yourself to listen to the SMR. It is not always that you will get power conditioners that seem to do so many things right, especially at the price that is is sold.

Unlike some power conditioning that adds some signature sound to a hifi system, I find that Stealth Mini Reference is pretty neutral in a sense that it does not enhance any part of the audio band. Furthermore, it is not a power conditioner that is current limiting to a system.

The midbass seems to be coming out much more pronouncedly than the Hydra and RGPC. I truly love this aspect of the SMR. As my Magneplanar is very sensitive to the purity of AC, it shows that the SMR actually has higher cleansing power than many conditioners.

On the other hand, the mids are more neutral than the Hydra. Some may like it but some like me may find it slightly bland but I believe those who dislike Hydra and RGPC would find this aspect very appealing.

The Silver/Gold in Oil is Mundorf’s current highest offering and they are among one of the best and most exotic capacitors available in the market. They are expensive but honestly, it is worth it. Compared to the Mundorf Silver/Gold, they have better layering and sound even more airy. The spatial soundstage window is opened wider and deeper. They are richer tonally and better layered than the Mundorf Silver/Gold. The Silver/Gold/Oil excels in refinement of highs and micro-details like the like the Mundorf Silver/Gold but takes it a few levels ahead in extension and creates more depth and width as if you have a larger area beyond the confinement of your room or car. Install it and you may never want to remove it.

Duelund VSF Aluminum Capacitor

Listening Impression:

Calm as a sleeping baby. The Duelund VSF capacitors give you that smile the minute you press the play button. The chocolate bar actually tastes better than it looks. One is tempted to close the eyes (although it is not a good idea while driving) and relax in sheer peacefulness as the music flows from the speakers to your ears and down to your heart and soul. The VSF Aluminum is Duelund’s most entry level offering but it still spells high-end at an affordable level. It is has less flair and is leaner sounding than some of the other high-end capacitors but they sound very natural and has the tonal that most capacitors are dying to achieve. Compared to the VSF Copper, it sounds more forward and less layered. Nevertheless to say, if you own a really kick-ass high-end speaker driver, you ought to take a bite on these.

Duelund VSF Copper Capacitor

Listening Impression:

We were charmed by this capacitor. The VSF Copper comes across very natural, smooth, clear, open and keeps everything in place in an extremely calm and controlled manner. One may think that this is a boring capacitor like some analog sounding capacitors in the market but we term it very natural for its ability to deliver dynamics whenever the type of music calls for it. The tonal balance and harmonics is a definite win-win and we love how it sounds with both instruments and human voices. It does not have the depth and wow factor like the Mundorf Silver/Gold/Oil but it makes up for it with its awesome tonality. We were extremely happy with how the imaging and separation of every individual instrument is portrayed with precision rather than cluster. And we just have to stress again, the VSF Copper is exceptionally natural sounding. This is a definite must have for any serious audiophile or music lover.

The Duelund CAST Capacitor is our no holds barred flagship capacitor. The construction builds on the foundation of our Virtual Stack Foil design but does so with the addition of a proprietary WPIO dielectricum which necessitates several days of impregnation under high pressure. We will spare you the technical details but as complicated it may seems, wait till you have heard how it sounds. The cast design helps music flow effortlessly with utmost presence and palpability. INDUCTORS

Mundorf Air Coils / Inductors

Mundorf is regarded as specialist in high-end components. All of our Mundorf coils are made of copper lacquer wire with a purity of > 99.995%. The coil body is made of glass fibre reinforced polyamide. The wire ends are tinned and labelled. Inductance is measured at 25 degrees Celsius; tolerance is +/- 3%. Air coils (i.e. coils without a ferro-magnetic core) are absolutely distortion-free, which on the face of it makes them ideal for all audio applications. The trouble is, their electrical resistance increases with their inductance. There are two solutions to this problem: One can either use very thick windings (this is why we use windings with wire up to 3mm in diameter) or coils with cores. Lower cost and smaller size are also common reasons for choosing cored coils but we choose to use only air coils.

Mundorf Flat Copper Foil Inductors

Mundorf manufactures an oxygen free copper foil coil (OFC copper) that exhibits consistent performance even beyond 100 kHz. The large surface reduces the skin effect (higher frequencies are carried on the copper surface). Additionally, the coil has a tough, yet elastic isolation made from polypropylene foil ensuring a high mechanical stability and, therefore, suppressing vibrations efficiently and effectively. Available in 16,14,12 and 10 gauge.

Duelund CAST Inductor

The Duelund CAST Air Core Inductor is our uncompromising take on inductors. The construction builds on the foundation of our foil design but does so with the addition of a proprietary WPIO dielectricum which necessitates several days of impregnation under high pressure. This creates a form with incredible damping properties giving a mechanical stability hitherto unheard of. This stability is then further augmented by a rigorous casting proces, keeping the inductor perfectly stable. On top of this casting proces, a ring of hard pressed paper strengthens the damping properties of the design helping music flow effortlessly. The Duelund CAST Inductor is simply without peers. RESISTORS

Thus far the resistor has been regarded as a necessary evil, something that was needed out of necessity but scorn for its negative impact on the fidelity of the signal. However, this is not true with the high-end resistors that we carry.

High power resistors are used in crossover networks to adjust the levels of individual speaker units, and they are also used in oscillator circuits and equalisers. Their basic job is to convert surplus or unwanted electrical power into heat. One of the most important specifications of a resistor is thus its power handling capacity, which is expressed in watts.

Resistors' residual inductance is also relevant for tweeter circuits. Ordinary ceramic resistors consist of an insulator body cast around a wire winding. At very high frequencies this winding can behave like a coil, blocking the corresponding frequencies. Because of this we recommend using at minimum Mundorf metal oxide resistors for tweeters. These components don't have any windings; instead, the resistance is made of a conductive metal oxide layer applied to a substrate. This design has virtually no inductance. If you are into serious high-end, you can consider the Mundorf M-Resist Supreme or Duelund Carbon/Silver Resistors.

Mundorf Metal Oxide Resistors

Metal oxide layer resistors have no residual inductance. This means that they should always be used for all applications calling for high transient rise times, such as mid-range speakers and tweeters. Mundorf metal oxide MR10 resistors have a continuous power rating of 10-watts but their peak capacities are much higher. Mundorf metal oxide MR3 resistors have a continuous power rating of 2.5-watts but their peak capacities are much higher. Size: L =17mm, D=6 mm, Wire 0.8 x 30 mm

Duelund Carbon/Silver Resistor

The world of resistors has changed with the introduction of the Duelund Coherent Audio Resistor. When designing this component the task was that the voicecoil of the speaker and the resistor was viewed as a whole rather than two separate entities. The result is a resistor which seemingly has no sound of its own and it allows the drivers to perform at their very best. Duelund believes in their "humble" opinion is that this resistor is the best "bang for the buck" upgrade available. Simply replace the resistor in series with your tweeter for unparalled transparency and dynamic ability.

In an ideal and simple form, we could use full-range speakers to wonderfully playback music in our home and car hi-fi. However in reality, most full-range speakers in exception to a few expensive and exclusive speaker drivers are not capable of reproducing the full frequency spectrum faithfully without signs of strain.

Instead of using full-range speakers, some car manufacturers adopt co-axial speakers that promises to give a step up in sound performance. The co-axial speakers are sold in pairs, each consisting of a high frequency driver, called a tweeter, attached to a cone, called the mid/woofer. As a complete whole, it plays the full range of frequencies from the highs, lows and the frequencies in between in which we call midrange.

The speakers will be fed with high level music signal by the player’s in-built amplification or a dedicated amplifier. In the case of a 2-way co-axial, a small capacitor is placed before the fragile tweeters to only allow the high frequencies to enter the voice coil and diaphragm. The midrange and low frequencies are filtered away to protect the tweeters from being damaged. This is the simplest form of a crossover, called a high-pass filter.

In most cases the bottom cone will still be fed with the entire music material and the effect you get with the extra tweeters, is a sparkle in the highs which translates to a slightly better separation and clearer reproduction. Some manufacturers introduced 3-way or 4-way co-axial speakers or 6x9” speakers, with large peak power ratings but sad to say most are hypes without much substance.

2-way separates or components were then introduced that comprises of a pair or tweeters and a mid/woofer. Tweeters came in all types of size and shapes, with ½”, ¾”, 1” and even 1-½” dome variants, using all sorts of materials from silk domes, aluminum/metal domes, beryllium and even diamond, each with it’s own character and capabilities. Common mid/woofer sizes are 4”, 5”, 5.25”,6”, 6.5”, 7” and 8”. These come with engineering designs of all sorts, various build quality, and cone materials such as paper, polypropylene, aluminum, Kevlar or hybrid materials. 3-way separates goes one step further by introducing a dedicated midrange driver that is usually 3”, 4” or 4.5”. In some extreme cases, a 5” driver is used but one has to take into account the complexity of installation and space constraints. 3-way separates introduces better division of duties, where highs are dedicated to the tweeters, mids to the midrange, and lows to the woofer. Properly set-up and implemented, they can sound a step up in performance compared to a typical 2-way component.

Why?

Anyone can build a crossover, seriously! However, it is the level of importance one place in building that really matters. The knowledge of how the transducer/driver will respond to different crossover points and crossover designs cannot be merely studied by reading but it has to be experienced.

A speaker is only as good as how it is being installed and the crossover being used. The crossover is the heart of any speakers. Speakers do not sound polished by themselves, they need to be controlled and guided to perform their best. Just like a dancer or a gymnast require a coach to bring out the best in them. That is why we call them raw drivers.

Unlike home audio loudspeakers that have the enclosure to bring out the best of the drivers, the car environment is limited to doors, kick panels and pillars for mounting and placement. Thus, even the best install will leave much to be desired and countless hours of tweaking are required to bring the best out from the speaker drivers.

Electronic crossovers are flexible and useful but the quality of sound and tonal character leaves much to be desired, leaving the reproduction to sound dry, clinical, thin and not involving. Equalizers will help in the aspect of fine tuning and tweaking but being electronic and limited to the quality available for car audio use, the more natural and analog method still boils down to the use of custom crossovers like you see in any home audio loudspeakers.

Many available equalizers are not accurate in the first place and they require more cabling which could end up costing more for a high-end setup using expensive interconnects. Common problems like noise will also be induced from the addition of an extra gear and the potential of picking up noise from additional wiring.

Our custom crossover comes complete with high-end parts soldered with 4% silver solder or optional Mundorf silver/gold solder, wired with Transparent Cable and encased in a tasteful wooden finish enclosure. We do not use any form of connectors to avoid sound degradation. Cables from the amplifier and speakers should be soldered and heat shrink for a safe and sure connection.

Power Management - Keeping your music under-control

What?

Power capacitors are used to provide the power stages with enough energy for dynamic bass signals. All Mundorf Mpower capacitors are high-quality German products. They are made with state-of-the-art technologies such as laser-welding and 12-point winding contacts for extremely low internal resistance and minimum inductance. These are the parameters that determine how quickly a capacitor can deliver its stored energy, and alongside capacitance they are the most important specifications. We stock capacitors with a capacitance of 1.0 (approx. 1 farad per 1,000 watts of music output) and 68,000uF headcap. We recommend a 1 farad Mundorf Mpower capacitor for each amplifier and a headcap each for the source (head unit) and other related equipment in the chain (head unit processors, equalizers, electronic crossovers etc.). Sharing a capacitor for multiple amplifiers is possible but the best results are obtained with a dedicated capacitor as close as possible to each amplifier. Why?

Before you run out there and buy just any capacitor for your car audio, you should first determine the best power wire to use for your system. Apart from the debate over the best type of power cable available in the market, most experienced car audio installers and enthusiast will agree that the most important factor in selecting power wire is to use the proper size. Wire is generally rated in size by American Wire Gauge, abbreviated AWG, or commonly just “gauge”. To determine the correct wire size for your application, you should first determine the maximum current flow through the cable (looking at the amplifier's fuse is a relatively simple and conservative way to do this). Then determine the length of the cable that you will use, and consult the following chart:

Apart from thickness, you should also consider the installation demands: will you need to run the wire around corners or through doors or into the engine compartment? These sorts of problems in the car audio application require some special care in cable selection. You will want to have cable that is flexible; it should have thick insulation as well, and not melt at high temperatures. You don't want to install wire that is rigid and prone to cracks and cuts, or else the results could literally lead to fire.

A Note of Caution!

Due to the high prices of copper, good power cables are becoming very rare these days and many retailers are resorting to buying undergauged wires from unscrupulous suppliers. For example their 4 gauge power wire was closer to 6 or sometimes even 8 gauge! As copper prices continued to climb, some have started using copper clad aluminum wire (CCA). That means aluminum wires that are plated with copper. Even worst, they may undergauge the wires so basically an undergauged 4 gauge CCA wire is performing closer to a 9 to 10 gauge copper cable. These “cheater” power cables are all over the market. At Audio Creations, we insist in using only true AWG gauge wires for our Mundorf capacitors and all your equipment.

Listening Impression:

Upon installing a Mundorf 1 farad Mpower capacitor to the front-stage amplifier, you will now find your amplifier performing the best possible. This actually means that most amplifiers are not maximized to its true potential. In many cases, the performance gain is many notches above what it was earlier. The improvement is very obvious even to an untrained ear. You will find the midrange and highs smoother and fuller. You will notice the midbass goes lower and has tighter focus and best of all the system has more energy yet sounding very natural. Similarly, adding a 1 farad Mpower to the subwoofer amplifier gives better control and dynamics to the bass reproduction.

Adding a headcap to the head unit was an eye opening experience. Imaging and staging became more pinpoint. It became more musical as the playback became less thin, fragile and brittle. With the head unit, external crossovers, external equalizers, processors and other equipment spiced up and performing with utmost stability with the addition of 1-2 Mundorf headcap, the system becomes more willing to be played loud with less strain, fatigue and harshness.

It has been said that the potential of one’s system is only as great as the weakest link. Transparent Cable (USA) – The Link200 Interconnect
Absolutely a fantastic deal for an Interconnect compared to any high-end car audio branded interconnects. We are pricing this too low in my opinion, as it sounds better than cables costing two times the price that you can find in the shops. This shielded cable consists of multiple strands of high purity oxygen-free copper precision wound around a center core of dielectric. The cable is flexible and not overly thick, which makes itself ideal in the car environment. A must upgrade for its price tag.

Listening Impression:

TheLink200 is Transparent Cable entry level offering but it is by no way entry level sounding in the way it portrays itself. Brand new from the box, it is evident that the solidity of the bass improved considerably and the noise floor is tamed down a notch or two, which allows the highs and midrange details to come forward. The forwardness or perceived brightness becomes less evident when the cable had some burn-in time. Compared to other entry level hi-fi offerings or high-end car audio brands, the cable gives better detail, dynamics and openness in the entire frequency spectrum, which spells neutrality. The higher models from Transparent Cable gives a similar character but with lower bass extension and an even quieter background. The Link 200 Interconnect offers a step up in performance from any high performance and high-end car audio cables.

Van den Hul D102MKIII Hybrid Interconnect

Build quality is top-notch and shielding is very thorough. The warm yellow-orange coloured jacket is thick (7.25mm) but soft (Hulliflex material), which makes it very nice to hold but less flexible on the bends. The Hybrid version comes with vdH’s Linear Structures Carbon technology used in the higher series, The SECOND. The cable is triple screened twin core (Balanced) and coated with pure silver strands made of a very high grade Matched Crystal (MC) Oxygen Free Copper. The capacitance between the 2 internal conductors is a very low 37pF/meter, making it suitable for short to long runs.

Listening Impression:

The D102MkIII cable is an award winning interconnect that gives you more music for the money. The cable gives a better feel especially in the low-end rumble, tightness in the midrange and midbass region. Highs are nicely brought across without hint of strain. Not as much low level detail as some cables at the same price point but it makes up with its neutrality and tonal accuracy.

We love how musical this cable sounded. Once harsh and untimely reproduction becomes well controlled, musical and involving once the cable it plugged in. Listening Impression:
The WH14 gauge cable gives plenty of performance for the money. The use of copper instead of thinned copper gives better weight and realism to the music and brings out better performance from your car audio. Long lengths of cable can still be affordable and you will never need to revert back to typical car audio cabling.

The construction is similar to the above but with extra insulation in the form of two Teflon insulators in between the individual conductors. Still very affordable and the jacket is flexible for long lengths and tight bends.
